Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway
Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway
After enjoying a superb view of Japan’s Three Great Alps, take a pleasant nature walk in Tsuboniwa.
Located in the relatively gentle northern Yatsugatake area of the Yatsugatake mountain range, almost in the center of Nagano Prefecture, this ropeway spans the saddle (the hollow between the two mountains) between Mt. Kitayokodake and Mt. Shimakareyama, both reaching elevations of around 2,400m. The large 100-passenger ropeway connects the base to the summit in about 7 minutes, making hiking in the northern Yatsugatake area much easier. It's also popular as transportation for people enjoying sightseeing, hiking, and in winter, skiing and snowboarding. Upon disembarking at the summit station, you'll find yourself in the Tsuboniwa Nature Park, designated as a Class 1 Special Protection Area of the National Park, where you can enjoy a leisurely 30-40 minute stroll. The park boasts diverse scenery throughout the seasons, from alpine plants in summer to autumn foliage, frost-covered trees, and snowscapes. From the observation deck next to the station, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Japanese Alps. You can also enjoy Food on the ropeway, with Restaurant at the base station offering homemade Shinshu cuisine centered around Western-style dishes. Additionally, the mountaintop station has a shop and a cafe, selling souvenirs related to the alpine plant "lingonberry" that grows naturally in the area.
