Ise Jingu Shrine

Ise Jingu Shrine

A spiritual homeland for the Japanese people, weaving together 2,000 years of history.

Ise Grand Shrine is located in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. Affectionately known as "O-Ise-san," its official name is simply "Jingu" (Grand Shrine), without the place name. Centered around the Kotai Jingu (Inner Shrine), which enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, the ancestor of the Imperial Family and the tutelary deity of all Japanese people, and the Toyouke Daijingu (Outer Shrine), which enshrines Toyouke Omikami, the guardian deity of clothing, food, and shelter, it also comprises 14 auxiliary shrines, 43 subordinate shrines, 24 minor shrines, and 42 affiliated shrines, and all 125 of these shrines together are referred to as "Jingu."

Looking back at history, the long-standing custom of visiting Ise Shrine is to start at the Outer Shrine and then proceed to the Inner Shrine. As you walk along the path surrounded by cedar groves, you will be enveloped in a sacred atmosphere that will naturally make you stand a little straighter. Among the approximately 1,500 festivals held throughout the year, the "Daily Morning and Evening Offering Festival," in which Food is offered to the enshrined deities, is a truly traditional event that has been continued uninterrupted every day for about 1,500 years. The largest festival at the shrine is the "Shikinen Sengu," which takes place once every 20 years. The Inner Shrine, the Outer Shrine, and the 14 auxiliary shrines closely associated with both are rebuilt on adjacent sites, and the sacred objects are moved there, preserving the fresh and vibrant appearance of the shrine buildings, which have remained unchanged for about 1,300 years. Reflect on this history of prayer as you embark on a pilgrimage to Ise Shrine, purifying your five senses.
