Toba A 10-minute walk from the station, the Toba stands on the shores of Toba Bay.Boasting the largest number of species in Japan, it is one of the country’s largest aquariums, home to approximately 1,200 different species. Of particular note is the fact that it houses dugongs, which are said to have inspired the mermaid legend. This Toba aquarium is the only place in Japan where you can see dugongs.
The aquarium is divided into 12 themed zones, and visitors can freely explore them in any order they like. There's the "Performance Stadium" where you can enjoy sea lion shows, the "Kingdom of Marine Mammals" where you can see seals and sea lions up close from a transparent tube, the "Jungle World" where manatees and capybaras live, and the "Polar Seas" where you can encounter sea otters and Commerson's dolphins. There's also "Coral Reef Diving" where colorful tropical fish swim, "The Seas of Ise-Shima and Japan" which introduces the creatures of Ise Bay, the "Miracle Forest" with amphibians and reptiles, and "Japanese Rivers" which recreates the creatures of clear streams, and so much more to see. Interaction events that bring you closer to the animals are held daily, such as penguin walks, walrus meet-and-greets, and Food times for sea otters, seals, and sea lions. It's a world of the sea that can captivate people of all ages, from children to adults.
