SARAS ART GALLERY, located on the second floor ART HOTEL Osaka Bay Tower will host a solo exhibition by patchwork quilt artist Matsumi YASUMOTO, titled "L'attribut – le ciel et l'azur –," from September 1st (Tue) to October 31st (Sat), 2026. SARAS ART GALLERY is a space that resonates with people based on the concept of "SYMPATHY," and showcases a variety of art works. This autumn, the hotel will exhibit patchwork quilt works for the first time. After graduating from a music university, artist Matsumi YASUMOTO honed her performance skills both domestically and internationally. While engaging in performance activities, music education, and volunteer work, she began creating art using fabric in 2007. She continues to create new works by harmonizing old kimono fabrics that are no longer used with textiles from Japan and abroad. In recent years, Matsumi Yasumoto has also focused on color, working with natural dyes such as cherry blossom dyes to incorporate natural hues into her work. This exhibition centers on the feelings that Matsumi Yasumoto has felt throughout her activities to date, and is titled "L'attribut – le ciel et l'azur –" (Japanese translation: "Symbol – Sky and Blue (Ultramarine) –"). The exhibition will showcase a variety of works that symbolize compassion for the vulnerable, respect for old things, and empathy for the unchanging blue of the sky and sea. There were days when I worried about my lack of skill, but I received strong encouragement from Maria, a lace artist and craftswoman from the Republic of Malta, who saw my collage quilts and told me to "keep putting your work out into the world," which allowed me to continue creating. Currently, I am creating works with the theme of "the fusion of traditional Japanese beauty and Western beauty." By harmonizing precious Japanese kimono (silk) and pongee that can no longer be produced, Korean organza silk, and Western Liberty fabrics on a single piece, I am breathing new life into old fabrics. In recent years, I have also been working on plant dyeing, where I boil cherry branches myself to dye the fabric, and I am diligently creating new works. The beauty of fabrics passed down through generations and the prayers of people who tried to move forward and live even in the face of hardship. By sewing these together into a single quilt, we hope to deliver warmth and hope for life to the hearts of everyone who sees it. [Artist's Main Background] Born in Osaka Prefecture.
