Ikuo Hirayama Silk Road Museum
A museum at the foot of Mount Yatsugatake, where Japanese paintings and artifacts from the Silk Road stand side by side.
Located on a lush green plateau at an altitude of approximately 1,000m on the southern foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains, this museum houses the works of Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama (1930-2009) and approximately 10,000 Silk Road art pieces collected by the Hirayama couple over 40 years. Visitors can trace the footsteps of Ikuo Hirayama, who continued his journey "in search of the origins of Japanese culture," through both his paintings and his collection.
The museum's collection centers around Buddhist sculptures from Gandhara, as well as art from ancient to modern times across West Asia, the Mediterranean, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. Many of Ikuo Hirayama's representative works are also on display, including his "Buddhist Life Series" depicting the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, and landscape paintings from various locations along the Silk Road. In addition to two to three special exhibitions per year, the museum also hosts gallery concerts, lectures, and workshops for children. With its glass-walled café, "Caravanserai," offering views of the Yatsugatake and Southern Alps, it's a truly open and inviting museum.
